Peppermint

“What humans call menthol is much more than that. Of course we use it for cooling, but it also helps us fight herbivores, pests, bacteria and fungi. That's why we can't live without it. Just like humans.”
The menthol kick
Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) is probably the coolest herb on earth. It’s also one of the most popular flavours today. The main reason for peppermint's fame is at the chemical level, with a special substance known as menthol. Menthol stimulates “cool” our receptors in the nose and mouth. This is why we experience a cooling sensation, especially when we breathe.
Peppermint was a latecomer. Mint was actually the first, being one of the oldest known herbs in the world. It was found in ancient Egyptian tombs. Peppermint only appeared in modern times, probably through hybridization. “Mentha x piperita”, the peculiar Latin name with the x in the middle, points to this. With modern peppermint, there's no reason to have bad breath.
